How Daryl Davis Got KKK Members to Hand in their Robes. Apply to the Cult of Woke??
video: How Daryl Davis Got KKK Members to Hand in their Robes. Apply to the Cult of Woke??
Darryl Davis is a personal hero. The reason, he managed to do something that I, nor virtually any other person on the planet has been able to, as he is personally responsible for between 50-60 people giving up their Klan robes, and more than 200 altogether indirectly, and he has the robes given to him to prove it.
This is someone who has serious influence and ability to persuade that we should all take notice of.
If he can convince avowed racists to give up their convictions, can we model his techniques to get today’s modern day hateful woke to give up theirs?
Darryl Davis is a jazz musician, who despite being born in 1958 only experienced racism for the first time at the age of 10 because he grew up on military bases around the world. It was such a foreign experience to him he refused to believe that when his parents explained to him what was racism that it was in fact what he experienced.
The question that percolated through his mind the entire time was “How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?”
That has been his lifelong question of his, and what has consumed him and what drove him to at great personal risk to ask it of the KKK members he met.
Many people would ask, how can you even sit down with such people and give them respect when all they have is hate in their heart.
But all that matters to me is what gets results, because I dream of being one that can get the modern day racists the woke, Antifa, the avowed BLM members to give up their black robes?
So I went through hours of watching the man interviewed, and thought it would be useful to take note of his strategies which I present to you briefly here.
1. Learn as much as you can about the other sides position and know their retorts before they make them
Most people have worn out arguments that they make time and time again. Anticipating what people will say and having a ready retort ready will knock them back on their intellectual heels, and they’ll likely be more open to the counter arguments.
2. You post and summon all the available facts
Smart people will digest them
Stupid people will read them, ignore them, and stick with their ideology– There’s no cure for stupidity.
This goes for message boards. And this goes for in person arguments. You are fishing with facts for open minded people. Many will not bite, they’re ideologically possessed and if they do bite and engage it’s only to take a chunk out of you.
But eventually there will be some you’ll be able to reel in with your facts and logic, just not the stupid ones.
3. Invite people and frame it as a conversation. If you frame it as a debate walls go up.
This makes a lot of sense. A debate is to be won, to expose the other sides flaws. A conversation is there to add understanding. People are much more open to ideas if they think you aren’t going to tear them apart.
4. With your points your goal is to create cognitive dissonance, so the ideas have to struggle against each other.
You have to nurture this seed of cognitive dissonance.
So you open them up and plant the seed and allow it to tear apart the structure of the belief system. Of course, it’s going to take continued nurturing of said seed, because not only the ego but the cult, be it the KKK or the woke, that helped grow the belief System is not going to stand idly by and let it be replaced.
Thus it might take repeated meeting, repeated interactions to do so.
5. Echo chambers are to the detriment of understanding another
It is why cults, including the cult of woke, eschew any outside contact.
It is really hard to nurture a seed when all new seedlings are cut down in the echo chamber as I just mentioned. It’s why social media where you are put into a company orchestrated bubble to milk profit out of you is debilitating to centrism and understanding of different points of views.
I have the utmost respect for Darryl Davis and what he’s been able to accomplish.
I argue with woke people, as far as i can tell, it is positively fruitless. Maybe I am talking with the stupid people. But there must be as many intelligent people in the woke community as that are somewhat open to the ideas as there are in the KKK.
What do you guys think. This seems like a sustained pursuit and not something that someone can do in one shot. What is the best way to approach the woke and maybe change their minds.
If Darryl Davis can do it, if he can deprogram haters, isn’t possible to deprogram someone immersed into the cult of woke?
