Those most in need do not hold a seminar about the seminar. They fix the thing that is killing them, then they try the next tool and figure out how to pull themselves out of the muck.

El Salvador used to be a place where MS-13 taxed the women running fruit carts on a nightly basis, and children were experts in geography: which blocks were safe to walk, and which would earn you a ticket to the morgue.

Bukele came to power and put tens of thousands of gangsters in cages, drove the official homicide rate from the worst in the hemisphere to the lowest in Latin America, and then pointed the same impatience at the classroom. He’s there to achieve results. To fix things.

A pilot in 171 public schools — AI tutors, teachers still in the room, a year of work — produced PISA-for-Schools scores above the national floor and in the neighborhood of Germany and Sweden’s 2022 averages.

That’s real progress, and nationwide results will be announced shortly. Contrast that with the world’s wealthiest city announcing a moratorium on the AI tutor and calling it wisdom.

Meet New York City. After COVID, when child risk was already known to be small and the learning loss was already landing on the poorest, the buildings stayed a mess of hybrid schedules, shutdowns, Zoom-in-a-room, and optional remote. A policy that treated adult comfort with the kid gloves that hardy children would rightfully call “pansy.”

Now the same coalition discovers humility. Mayor Mamdani will not let most children below ninth grade talk to a generative tutor for a year. The child may not use it to learn. The national teachers’ unions smiled and said it looked like their proposal. Congrats, you guys win your second Olympic medal of selfishness.

Granted, you don’t need a conspiracy among special interests and unions to oppose a potential substitute for headcount. They will tell you it is about human connection. Children do need humans. They also need ten thousand patient repetitions from something that does not sneer, does not get tired, and will explain fractions at midnight in the voice the kid can stand.

A chatbot can become a crutch. A teacher can become a babysitter with a pension. Neither fact requires banning the only scalable tutor a poor student will ever have.

This is the tell of a decrepit society. When you are drowning, you grab the rope. When you’re sunbathing on a boat someone else built, you form a committee to study the rope.

Socialism in the American municipal style is not workers owning the mill. It is exceptionalism treated as rude, allies treated as sacred, and any technology that might let a kid outrun the median treated as a hazard until the median’s representatives have negotiated the terms. Zero exceptionalism is the point.

If the tutor works, someone will ask why the staffing model cannot change. Better to pause the tutor. The countries that still remember hunger will run the experiment. The districts that remember only equity language will run out the clock. Wealthy New York children will get the tool at home anyway. Poor New York children will get a lecture about screens and a teacher who is allowed to prompt the model in private. Salvadoran kids in the pilot already saw real improvement on an international test. If those gains survive a national sample, the gap will not be “culture.” It will be who was allowed to practice.

You want a prediction that is not science fiction? The first people into the pod will not be the ones who used the machine to get stronger. It will be the ones who were told the machine was dangerous, never learned to wrestle with a hard problem with or without it, and then discovered that a generated world does not grade them. It allows them equity in the Matrix, so strap on in.

Refusal of new ways of learning is not prudence. It is how a comfortable class keeps its allies paid while other people’s children fall behind a country that used to be the murder capital of the world. Do what it takes or get out of the way. History is not waiting for the committee to turn over its results to the next one.
