NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s expanded public charge rule, set to take effect September 18. The rule lets immigration officers weigh use of means-tested benefits such as Medicaid, SNAP, and housing aid when deciding green cards and some visas. Mamdani called the policy cruel and said families, including those with U.S.-citizen children, are already dropping benefits out of fear it will hurt their immigration cases.
